How to Take a Screenshot
Learning how to take a screenshot is one of the easiest things you can do on a PC. You can take a screenshot while you are doing anything on your computer, and it has many practical uses.
- The first step is to find the “print screen” button on your keyboard, which will likely be abbreviated as something like “prt sc”. You will likely have to press and hold the Function (“fn”) key or a similar button and the “print screen” key at the same time to take the screenshot (also known as a screen capture or “screencap” for short).
- Your computer probably won’t give you any indication that your screenshot has been taken, even if you’ve done it correctly. If you have taken your screenshot properly, you will be able to “paste” the image into a program where you can save and/or edit it. 3
- You don’t need to download any special programs if you’re using almost any version of Windows: just open Paint, Microsoft’s default image editor (look in Start Menu > Programs > Accessories).
- Click on the Edit menu, and you should see the option to Paste. If it is grayed out, you need to go back and try Step 1 again. If you can paste, go ahead, and you should see the complete image of your screen at the time you pressed the buttons.
- You can do limited editing in Paint, but first, you should click on File, then Save As, and save a copy of your image. The JPG format is the most widely used and should be your first option.
- The most likely edit you would probably want to make is to shrink the size of the image down, since it is as big as your screen when you start and thus difficult to view as a whole. In Paint, click on Image and then on Resize/Skew.
- Change the percentages in the Resize section to make your image a little smaller (75% would be a good number to try if you’re not sure).
- Make sure to save your edited image again (File > Save). Once you’ve saved your image, you’re done!
It’s just that easy to learn how to take a screenshot, and now you can teach others what you’ve learned.
