How to Quit Smoking
A long time ago in the history of America many people enjoyed the taste of tobacco from “smoking pipes” to homemade cigarettes that were originally rolled up in plants. Smoking back then was a sign of leisure and status. Now, it’s simply a way for many people to have health problems and quit possibly a short life. Here are some methods that individuals can use on how to quit smoking.
- Anybody who wants to stop smoking has to have the desire to stop. Without having a genuine desire to quit people will not stop or they quit temporarily then go back to smoking again.
- The next step that an individual must take is to change their thinking about smoking. For example, if a person associates smoking with something pleasurable or as form of relieving stress then those particular characterstics must be altered in order to help the individual in the process of quiting smoking. This is not an easy step but it’s a crucial one.
- An individual must change their routine. Any person who wants to be successful with doing away with smoking must change their associations with places and people that incite the desire to smoke. This is also important because all people have certain patterns of behavior they follow in life and in order to break those patterns they have to create new ways of living. This holds true as well for those wanting to quit smoking.
- Take one day at a time. This is very important for a person who wants to go through the process of quiting to smoke. Nobody is perfect and people mess up. If someone smokes who is in the process of wanting to stop, they shouldn’t give up. Remember patterns of behavior are hard to break but the thing is that if an individual stays persistent they will have a change.
- Sometimes less may be better. Again, people are not perfect but they should also realize they have the ability to change. So a smoker who ends up smoking 2 cigarettes a day as opposed to smoking 2 packs a day like they used to, then for that individual this is almost as good as quitting.
- There are many other things an individual can do to quit smoking. Some people use patches, some people use smoking gum, and some people just stop and never go back again (as strange as that sounds).
Each person is different and no one solution that fits all. Keep in mind that success with wanting to quit smoking deals with one primary factor and that’s the genuine desire to really want to stop this behavior. The above points lay out a solid foundation for how to quit smoking. Unfortunately, no tutorial is going to instill the single greatest factor in whether you are successful in your battle to quite cigarettes, and that is willpower. Good luck, and just remember to take each day as it comes.
