How to Permanently Delete Files
Deleting files is not as simple as you may think. When you delete a file, it isn’t always gone for good. Once you delete a file off your C: drive it usually goes into your Recycle Bin or Trash Can. Many people don’t know how to permanently delete files and that’s what I’ll be teaching you.
- Select the file that you want deleted.
- There are three different ways to start deleting the selected file. Either drag the file to the recycle bin, while the file is selected push the delete key on the keyboard, or right click the selected file and select delete option on the drop down menu.
- Open the recycle bin. (icon found usually on desktop)
- Select the file that is to be deleted.
- There are two options of permanently deleting files from the recycle bin. Either right click the selected file and select delete on the drop down menu, or select the option of “Empty the Recycle Bin” on the menu to the left of the window.
- Close the Recycle Bin window and you are all done.
- REMINDER: If the file is big enough, there will be pop-up stating that the file is too big for the Recycle Bin and it will be permanently deleted from your computer. When this happens there will be no need to open the Recycle Bin because the file is already deleted from your computer.
- REMINDER: Once you delete a file from the Recycle Bin, the file is gone for good. So make sure you have the right file deleted and that you really want that file gone.
- REMINDER: If you accidentally sent a file to the Recycle Bin, there is an option of reviving that file and sending it back to the last spot that it was on your computer.
If the steps above are followed, you know how to permanently delete files successfully. Remember that cyber security is not as much technology dependent, but rather personal practices. Technology can help, but care and attention to a couple of basic steps will protect you and your family from the evils of credit card fraud or identity theft. So no more Recycle Bins full of unnecessary files that should have been deleted along time ago. You now have a clean computer filled with files that you want to keep. Get started and clean out that hard drive.
