How to Organize Your Home Office
Your home office is a multi functional place where you will manage your household finances, events, school and possibly even a small business. Several members of your household may also use your home office, and so efficient organization of your home office will make your life simpler and less stressful. The central point of your home office will most likely be your computer. It can be frustrating using a computer when the desktop has part finished projects left there by other people. Here are some useful tips on how to organize your home office when it comes to the computer.
- Set up individual user accounts on your computer for each member of the family. If you are a parent of children and teens it would be good idea to give yourself administrator access to the accounts of minors so you can be sure that they are being safe whilst using the computer.
- Partition the hard drive of the computer so that each person has his or her own drive space. If space is running low consider investing in external hard drives for individual members to store their data.
- Consider adjustable height furniture that each member of your household can access the computer in an ergonomically safe manner.
- Make a rule that household members are responsible for leaving the public desktop clear and that they only have themselves to blame if projects left on the public desktop space is moved to trash.
Your home office will also be a place where many documents will pass through and will need to be processed. You will processing information about all elements of your life. Filing cabinets are a good idea to keep your office organized. Desks also come with storage space. Here are some tips to help you manage and organize your home office space.
- Invest in a filing cabinet. In the filing cabinet put dividers to separate all the different elements that you are managing in you home office. Some elements for example a home business may require one or more complete drawers dedicated to that purpose.
- Files come in many colors. You can assign different color files for different things for example, Red files are for car documents, blue files are for bank documents, green for insurance etc.
- Keep like items together and consider buying small storage items for things like pens, paperclips etc. Make sure everything in the office has a home and not just dumped on the desk.
- For larger items such as reams of paper use a closet close to your desk.
- Invest in a multi level tray that can be used as an in tray out tray for documents that need to be taken care of immediately. Make sure that you clear your in tray quickly so as not to allow documents to pile up.
- Make sure that everything you use is put away as soon as you finish to avoid chaos piling up in your office.
- Make a rule that states anything that does not belong in the office is kept out of the office at all times to avoid clutter.
- If you are running a business from home keep anything that pertains to the business separate from the management of your home. If you stop working on one thing put everything away, before starting on something else.
- Make a rule that states all household members- if you use it, put it back where it belongs. Aside from following simple rules, you can organize your home office by being wise in the selection of your office furniture. Choosing a desk that has storage space for example will give more options to help with organizing the space. Make sure that any furniture you buy will make efficient use of the space you are going to put it in.
