Sushi is a Japanese food that often involves raw or undercooked seafood. A popular form of sushi is called Maki, which is a rolled sushi. The main components of Maki are usually nori (seaweed), rice and whatever you have chosen for the filling. You’ll need a bamboo mat to help roll the sushi and press it into a solid form. You’ll also need some sushi rice, which is short grained white rice, steamed and cooled, then treated with some rice vinegar and sugar. One final item you’ll need is a sharp knife to cut the Maki after you’ve rolled it. More people should learn how to make sushi, as it is a flavorful food that is easy to make.
- Place a sheet of nori on the bamboo mat.
- Spread a small amount of sushi rice evenly over the nori. The amount used should be about the size of two golf balls. If you’re going to do an inside-out Maki, you should place a sheet of plastic wrap between the rice and the bamboo mat so that you don’t have problems with the rice sticking to the mat.
- Place the filling lengthwise on top of the rice, it should be in a line so that it gets rolled up all at once. There is really no limit to what you can put in the Maki, I’ve seen tempura shrimp, raw tuna, avocado, cucumber, octopus, salmon, etc. Use your imagination.
- Roll the rice and nori using the bamboo mat.
- Remove the mat from the roll.
- Using a sharp knife, cut the rolls so that the round pieces are about 0.5” thick. It helps to wet the knife first so it doesn’t stick to the rice.
- Place the cut pieces on a plate.
Most people consume sushi with a side of soy sauce and wasabi, I find that these two items enhance the flavor of the sushi. For variation, you can make the sushi with the nori on the inside, and then roll the completed Maki in sesame seeds (or similar garnish, such as fish eggs). There are ther healthy variations, such as using brown rice, or low sodium soy sauce. Follow the steps above and impress your friends at a party by showing them how to make sushi. Now that you know how to make sushi, I hope that you enjoy it.
