How to Increase the Speed of your PC

The personal computer is an important part of everyone’s everyday life. Nearly everyone uses the computer for some reason. In order to ensure that the computer’s efficiency and speed is up to par with the needs or expectations of the user, there are a few, very simple tasks you can do to help. Follow these steps to increase the speed of your PC.

  1. Clear unnecessary folders: In your start menu should be a search bar. Search for the term “cookies” or “temp.” You should find both of these to be folders. Nothing in these folders is vital for your computers performance, and simply takes up space. They can all be deleted.
  2. For those running Windows Vista: Open the “Owner” folder. Go to the AppData folder (hidden files and folders must be turned on for this to be seen). Then proceed to “Local”, and then finally scroll down to find “Temp.” Everything in this folder, which could hold up to numerous megabytes without you being aware, can be cleared.
  3. End unnecessary processes: Press CTRL + SHIFT + ESC. Windows task manager should appear. Click on the “Processes” tab. These listed are all processes which are currently running at this moment. End the ones you do not need, and are 100% SURE that you do not need. For example, do not end processes who’s function you are unaware of. If you are unfamiliar with the name, you should leave it or look it up on the internet before ending it, as it could cause unwanted things to happen to your computer at the time. Ending these processes could increase the speed of your PC very significantly.
  4. Purchase more RAM: RAM, or random access memory, is the memory that your computer is using at the moment. Average computers range in RAM, anywhere from 500 MB up to 2 GB. RAM can be purchased at electronic stores, who will usually install the hardware for you there. This allows your computer to have more, and bigger processes/applications running smoothly.
  5. Run antispyware/virus protection Scans: Virus’ and spyware can take up a lot of space on your PC while constantly performing and using up RAM as well. Scanning the computer to get rid of these has a very high possibility of increasing the performance/speed of your PC.

These tasks are very simple to do and will greatly increase the speed of the PC. This can all be done for free, with the exception of purchasing RAM which is typically $30 or less. Increasing the speed and performance of the computer opens the user up to numerous possibilities in the world of computing, while making the life of the user much easier in terms of computing. Apply these steps now in order to begin using the maximum potential of your computer.
