A puppy can be the cutest, most exciting new member to a household. But they are also quite a handful. A puppy is just a young bundle of energy, and the means of training them to understand the rule of the house can be difficult for someone new to dog training. But it can also be very rewarding to train a puppy by yourself, creating a very important bond between master and dog. Here is a step-by-step to guide you through the task of training your new best friend.
1. Keep a close eye out on the puppy for the first few days. Take him out to the yard often to avoid accidents in the house whenever you can. Study his or her behavior whenever they do relieve themselves. This way, accidents in the house can be prevented because you’ll know the signs.
2. At night, to prevent roaming and urinating in distant areas of the house, keep the puppy in a box or crate. A puppy normally doesn’t want to make a mess in its sleeping area.
3. If he becomes restless at night, take him outside to relieve himself, and do the same first thing in the morning. This way the puppy doesn’t have a chance to urinate while on the way to the outdoors. Prevent the puppy from having the opportunity to make a mess inside, and slowly the puppy will make a solid connection.
4. After any activity, such as eating or sleeping, take the puppy outside. This way he or she will become accustomed to going to the bathroom outside instead of inside.
5. Try creating a certain area outside that the puppy always urinates around. This way the puppy can associate the action with a more specific place and develop a habit.
6. Whenever the puppy successfully urinates or defecates outside, treat him. Whether the treat is a chew toy or a snack, it will encourage his good behavior.
7. Even as the puppy matures, rewards in some form are always beneficial. Be consistent with rewards when he succeeds, and punishment when there are accidents indoors. NEVER physically punish your puppy. Verbal commands and deprivation of favorite toys are better solutions.
So enjoy your new puppy, and try and be patient as they adjust to their surroundings. Follow the steps outlined above on How to House Train a Puppy, and before you know it your puppy will be happy, less stressed and loving…
