How to Buy a Computer
Purchasing your very own computer can be an extremely difficult task. Getting confused with unfamiliar terms like RAM, Hard Drive, Memory is all too common of a problem. This article will help serve as a guide to purchasing a computer that is right for you.
1) Identify what you want your computer to be. If you are looking for mobility you are not going to get as powerful of a machine in a laptop than in a desktop. Although mobility is convenient with a laptop, low to middle end machines tend to be very slow after a couple of weeks of use.
2) Identify what you will be using your computer for. If you will just be surfing the web and checking email than you will not need a high end and expensive machine. Whereas if you are a professional image editor or graphics designer you are going to need something more powerful.
3) Identify the specifications you desire. RAM (or Remote Access Memory) in lamens terms speeds up load time and multitasking abilities. Standard on most laptop/desktops in the current market is 2 gigabytes, although finding one with 1-2gb is not uncommon. Secondly is storage. Decide how big of a hard drive you want in terms of gigabytes. If you are a music and movie loving fanatic I would suggest a larger hard drive somewhere in the vicinity of 200+ gb. Standard storage in most computers is 100gb++ so you can’t really go wrong.
4) Identify what is right for you. Lets face it, you’re going to be staring at the screen for hours at a time so it is crucial you pick a computer/laptop that is aesthetically pleasing.
5) An often overlooked issue when purchasing a computer is the retailer, and their return and servicing policies. Companies such as DELL have made it their goal to offer custom solutions with clearly defined service policies. Other retailers such as COSTCO offer flexible return options, which can be very attractive to the consumer, especially since they can ‘try before they buy’. Keep this in mind when making your decision.
Hopefully this guide on how to buy a computer will serve useful and aid you in your purchasing decisions. Always remember that buying your own computer is a very personal choice, so don’t let others influence your decision!
